Kenmore Washer F16 Error — Door Lock Mechanism Fault
The F16 error code means the door lock assembly has not engaged or disengaged properly. Front-load washers require the door to be fully locked before the drum begins spinning. F16 prevents the washer from operating until the lock circuit is verified.
Common Causes
- Worn or damaged door latch hook
- Failed door lock solenoid or wax motor
- Torn or compressed door boot gasket pushing back on the door
- Wiring harness disconnect at the lock assembly
Test the Lock
- Close the door firmly and listen for the audible lock click.
- Try starting a cycle and listen for the lock engaging (distinct clunk).
- Inspect the door boot gasket for tears or forward bulging that prevents full door closure.
Replacement
Door lock assemblies are model-specific. Our technicians carry the most common Kenmore door lock assemblies and can replace them during the initial service call, typically in under 45 minutes.
