Kenmore Dryer F05 Error — Safety Thermostat Tripped
The F05 error code means the high-limit safety thermostat has tripped and opened its circuit. Unlike regular thermostats that cycle on and off to regulate heat, the safety thermostat is a one-shot device — once it opens due to excessive temperature, it does not automatically reset. It must be manually replaced.
Why It Trips
The safety thermostat trips to prevent fire when the dryer overheats. The root cause is almost always a restricted exhaust vent. When airflow is reduced, heat builds up past the thermostat’s threshold. Simply replacing the thermostat without clearing the vent will cause the new one to trip again within days.
Mandatory Vent Inspection
- Disconnect the vent duct from the back of the dryer.
- Run the dryer with the duct disconnected — if it heats normally, the vent is blocked.
- Clean the full length of the vent duct, including any bends and the exterior cap.
Thermostat Replacement
Safety thermostat replacement involves accessing the heating element assembly. Our technicians replace the thermostat, inspect the thermal fuse (which often blows at the same time), clean lint from the heating chamber, and verify vent path clearance before the job is complete.
