The F28 error code on a Kenmore dryer indicates a problem with the moisture sensor bars. These sensors measure the moisture level in your laundry to automatically determine when clothes are dry. When the sensors fail or become coated with fabric softener residue, the dryer cannot accurately detect moisture levels.
Causes of the F28 Error
- Residue buildup on the moisture sensor bars (fabric softener, dryer sheet coating)
- Failed moisture sensor
- Wiring fault between sensor and control board
Troubleshooting
- Locate the moisture sensor bars — typically two or three metal strips on the inside of the drum near the lint filter opening.
- Clean them with a cotton ball dampened with rubbing alcohol. Rinse with a damp cloth and allow to dry before running the dryer.
- Reset and test with a normal load.
- If F28 persists after cleaning, the sensor or its wiring requires professional inspection.
