Kenmore Dryer F12 Error — Exhaust Temperature Out of Range
The F12 error code means the exhaust temperature sensor is reading a value that is outside the expected operating range — either too high or too low compared to what the control board expects given the current heating commands. This can indicate a sensor failure, partial vent blockage, or calibration drift in the sensor.
Checking Vent Path First
Before any parts are replaced, verify the dryer vent is completely clear. A partially blocked vent causes exhaust temperatures to rise dramatically, which can push the sensor reading out of range even if the sensor itself is functioning correctly.
Sensor Testing and Replacement
Test the exhaust thermistor resistance at ambient temperature and compare to the specification in your model’s service manual. Readings outside the normal range confirm sensor replacement is required. Our technicians carry thermistors for all major Kenmore dryer model lines.
