Kenmore Washer F9 Error — Drain Time Exceeded

The F9 error code means the washer took longer than 8 minutes to drain the drum. The control board expects draining to complete within a set time window; if water remains after that period, F9 is displayed and the cycle halts.

Common Causes

  • Clogged pump filter (found behind the access panel at the bottom front of the machine)
  • Kinked or blocked drain hose
  • Drain hose installed too far into the standpipe (creating a siphon)
  • Failed drain pump motor
  • Partial clog in the household drain pipe

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Place towels and a shallow pan under the pump access door.
  2. Open the access door and unscrew the pump filter — expect water to drain out.
  3. Clean the filter of lint, coins, and debris.
  4. Check the drain hose for kinks; ensure it is not inserted more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe.
  5. Run a test spin cycle to check if draining is now normal.

If the Pump Has Failed

When the pump filter is clear but F9 persists (with water staying in the drum), test the drain pump for continuity. No continuity means a failed pump motor. Our technicians replace drain pumps same-day and restore full washer function.
