The E1 error code appears on Kenmore induction cooktops and indicates the IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) — the power switching component — has exceeded its safe operating temperature. The cooktop shuts down to protect the electronics.
Causes
- Blocked ventilation ports under the cooktop
- Using oversized cookware that blocks airflow
- Extended high-power cooking session without rest
- Failing cooling fan inside the cooktop
What To Do
- Turn the cooktop off and allow 15–20 minutes for it to cool.
- Ensure nothing is blocking the vents on the underside or sides of the unit.
- If E1 occurs consistently within minutes of use, the internal cooling fan may have failed and requires professional replacement.
