Proper maintenance of your Kenmore washer extends its lifespan, prevents costly repairs, and keeps your laundry fresh and clean. Follow these maintenance tips to keep your washer in top condition year-round.
1. Clean the Washer Monthly
Run a Tub Clean or Clean Washer cycle monthly using a washer cleaner tablet or two cups of white vinegar. This removes detergent buildup, mineral deposits, and bacteria that cause odors. For front-load washers, this step is especially critical.
2. Clean the Door Gasket (Front-Load Models)
The rubber door gasket on Kenmore front-load washers is prone to mold and mildew buildup. After every wash, wipe the gasket dry with a clean cloth and leave the door slightly ajar to allow air circulation. Monthly, clean the gasket thoroughly with a diluted bleach solution or white vinegar.
3. Clean the Dispenser Drawer
Remove and rinse the detergent, fabric softener, and bleach dispenser monthly. Residue buildup can clog the dispenser and cause improper dispensing. Use warm water and a soft brush to clean all compartments.
4. Clean the Pump Filter (Front-Load Models)
Kenmore front-load washers have a pump filter that catches lint, coins, and small items. Clean it every 3 months: locate the access panel at the lower front, slowly unscrew the filter (have towels ready for water), remove debris, rinse, and reinstall.
5. Use the Right Detergent in the Right Amount
Always use HE (High Efficiency) detergent in Kenmore HE washers. Using regular detergent or too much HE detergent creates excessive suds that can leave residue on clothes and damage the washer over time. Use only the amount specified on the detergent packaging.
6. Level Your Washer
An unlevel washer vibrates excessively during spin, wearing out bearings and shock absorbers prematurely. Check that all four feet are firmly on the floor and adjust the leveling feet as needed. Use a bubble level to confirm.
7. Don’t Overload the Washer
Overloading strains the motor, bearings, and drum. The drum should be filled loosely — clothes should be able to move freely. For most Kenmore washers, fill the drum to no more than 3/4 capacity.
8. Inspect Hoses Annually
Check the water supply hoses behind your washer for cracks, bulging, or corrosion. Replace hoses every 5 years regardless of visible condition — a burst hose can cause catastrophic water damage. Consider upgrading to braided steel hoses for added durability.
