Kenmore Washer Leaking: Causes and Fixes

How to Find and Fix a Kenmore Washer Leak

A leaking Kenmore washer can cause significant water damage to flooring, cabinets, and sub-flooring if not addressed promptly. The key to a fast fix is correctly identifying the leak source. This guide covers the most common leak locations and what to do about each.

Front-Load Door Boot Seal (Most Common)

The rubber door boot gasket on front-load Kenmore washers is the single most common leak source. Over time, the gasket develops tears, cracks, or mold-related deterioration that allows water to escape during cycles. Inspect the gasket by pulling back the folds and looking for tears, punctures, or debris accumulation. A torn door boot requires replacement.

Inlet Hoses

The hot and cold water inlet hoses at the back of the machine deteriorate over time. Rubber hoses should be replaced every 5–7 years regardless of visible condition. Inspect the hose washers (rubber gaskets inside the hose fittings) and hand-tighten all connections. Do not over-tighten with tools as this can crack the fitting.

Drain Hose

The drain hose can crack, especially at the connection points, or become partially dislodged from the standpipe. Ensure the drain hose is securely fastened to the standpipe and the hose itself has no splits or cracks.

Pump Filter and Housing

The pump filter access cover (bottom-front of the machine) can leak if improperly tightened or if the O-ring seal has worn out. Ensure the filter is screwed in completely after each cleaning.

Tub Seal and Bearing

If water is leaking from directly beneath the washer during the spin cycle, the tub seal and bearing have likely failed. This is a major repair requiring complete disassembly. Contact our technicians for a professional assessment.
