Kenmore Washer Making Loud Noise: Diagnosis Guide

Diagnosing Unusual Kenmore Washer Noises

Your Kenmore washer communicates through sound. Unusual noises during operation are often early warning signs of component failure. Catching them early prevents expensive repairs. This guide helps you identify what each sound means.

Loud Banging or Thumping During Spin

The most common cause of banging is an unbalanced load — redistribute the laundry and retry. If banging persists with a balanced load, the drum bearings may be failing. A worn tub bearing allows the drum to wobble during high-speed spin, creating a loud knocking. This requires professional repair.

Grinding or Scraping Sound

A grinding sound often indicates a foreign object (coin, button, underwire) caught between the drum and tub. Run a spin cycle with the washer empty — if grinding continues, inspect around the drum paddle holes and door boot for trapped objects. A grinding bearing makes a continuous low grinding noise during all drum movement.

Squealing During Agitation

A high-pitched squeal during agitation in top-load models typically points to a worn drive belt or failing agitator dogs (the plastic cogs inside the agitator that allow it to ratchet in one direction). Both are inexpensive parts.

Loud Pumping/Sucking Sound During Drain

A gurgling or sucking sound during drain is normal. However, an unusually loud rattling during drain indicates the pump impeller has debris caught in it. Clean the pump filter and check for objects.

Humming Without Movement

A sustained hum without drum rotation usually means the motor is receiving power but the drum is mechanically stuck — often a broken belt, seized bearing, or jammed pump. Unplug the machine immediately and call for service.
