The dF display on some Kenmore freezers indicates the freezer is currently in a defrost cycle. This is a status indicator, not an error, but it can persist if the defrost system fails to complete normally.
When Is dF Normal?
- The freezer automatically defrosts every 8–12 hours for approximately 20–30 minutes.
- During dF, the compressor pauses and the defrost heater melts frost from the evaporator coil.
- The display may show a slightly rising temperature during this period — this is normal.
When Is dF a Problem?
If dF stays on for more than 45 minutes or the freezer temperature rises significantly during defrost, the defrost system may be stuck. Check the defrost heater and thermostat.
