Kenmore Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working: Complete Troubleshooting

Why Your Kenmore Ice Maker Stopped Working

Ice maker issues are among the most common Kenmore refrigerator complaints. Before calling for service, work through this systematic troubleshooting guide — many ice maker problems have simple solutions.

Step 1: Check the Ice Maker Switch

This sounds obvious, but the ice maker on/off switch is frequently bumped to the “off” position during cleaning. Locate the switch (arm-style or button-style depending on your model) and verify it is in the “on” (down) position.

Step 2: Check the Freezer Temperature

The ice maker requires the freezer to be at or below 10°F (-12°C) to produce ice. At temperatures above 15°F, ice production slows dramatically or stops. Verify the freezer temperature setting and allow 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize after adjustment.

Step 3: Replace the Water Filter

A clogged water filter severely restricts water flow to the ice maker, resulting in small, hollow, or no ice cubes. Kenmore recommends filter replacement every 6 months. Replace the filter and run three batches of ice before judging performance.

Step 4: Check Water Pressure

The ice maker requires minimum 20 psi (optimal 40–80 psi) to fill properly. Low household water pressure produces undersized cubes or no ice. Test your water pressure with an inexpensive gauge at a nearby outdoor faucet.

Step 5: Inspect the Water Inlet Valve

The solenoid valve that allows water into the ice maker can fail mechanically (clogged screen) or electrically (failed solenoid winding). Clean the inlet screens and test the ice maker solenoid for continuity.

Step 6: Reset the Ice Maker

Most Kenmore ice makers have a test/reset button located on the ice maker module. Press and hold for 3 seconds. The ice maker will run a test fill cycle, allowing you to verify water flow.

When to Call a Technician

If the ice maker fails to fill after the test cycle with good water pressure and a new filter, the ice maker module itself has likely failed and requires replacement. Our technicians carry Kenmore ice maker assemblies for same-day repair.
